Silver Linings bio picture
  • Welcome to Silver Linings, The Blog of Carrie Hill Photography

"Why Silver Linings?" you ask. Well, for starters, there's that cloud...

And, there's the optimism of childhood that I aim to capture in all of my work. There is nothing more beautiful than looking at the world through the eyes of a child. They always find the silver lining.

And yet, that joyful, exuberant innocence is so fleeting. Our children grow, all too quickly, into strong and capable grown-ups...

The beauty in all of this is the legacy of memories we can capture and share with our children, and with their children, and maybe theirs as well.

And that is the silver lining.

S Family Peek

I just loved working with this family last weekend and capturing these sweet moments with their brand new son. Mr. W was a complete dream baby. Happy, sleepy, adorable.

Thank you so much, S family! I can’t wait to see you again.

xo,

Carrie

Sneaks from Winter Clover Market…Main Line Event Photographer

Winter blahs? Who has time for the winter blahs this year! Truly, January has been an amazing month for Carrie Hill Photography. I’m excited to start sharing some of the new and exciting things planned for this year with all of you, but before we go there, I wanted to share some of the beauty and color from last month’s first Winter Clover Market.

You all know what a fan I am of Clover Market, which is held on three Sundays in Ardmore in the Spring and Fall, so I was beyond excited when my friend and colleague, Janet Long, shared with me the secret news late last Summer that she was scouting locations for a winter market in the city. Knowing Janet’s passion for all she does, and how well she implements her visions, I knew it would be successful. And of course, the event did not disappoint.

Here are a few of my favorite images from the day, including a little peek-a-boo of yours truly.

Happy February!

Holly Gruszka - These photos are great Carrie. I’ve always enjoyed visiting Clover Market and I thought there was something really unique about this market at the Armory. You captured the day beautifully.

Resolutions…Goals…A Post for the New Year

I do not make New Year’s resolutions. And it’s not for any philosophically meaningful reason…it’s just not something that I do. As I prepared for the end of 2012, however, I felt this nagging desire to start 2013 a little differently. With some goals. It may be helpful for me to backtrack a bit.

Building a business from scratch can be daunting. When it’s something that you love (and please, friends, PLEASE do not try to start a business unless it is something that you do love), you invest little pieces of yourself into each element, and it can be difficult…bordering on impossible…to look at things critically once you’re that invested. And sometimes your subconscious self is trying to tell you to look at something differently, but you continue on in your day to day course ignoring that little voice in your head because you have work to do, clients to contact, galleries to edit, and shipments to process.

But that little voice usually doesn’t stop talking. And it has a tendency to get louder as time passes. My nagging little voice started needling me about this blog in the early Spring of last year. It started out as a low little voice, saying things like, “don’t you want to write a little bit more there, occasionally?” or “it doesn’t always have to be solely about the images…you can inject some more of yourself and your personality in there.” Throughout the summer, the little voice started to get gradually louder. “Your brand is you. Start sharing more of who you are.” By mid-November, the voice began shouting. “MAKE THIS MORE PERSONAL!!! SHARE MORE OF YOURSELF THERE!!! LET PROSPECTIVE CLIENTS GET TO KNOW YOU A BIT MORE THROUGH YOUR WRITING!!!”

I’ve given into the little voice, friends, and hence, I’m starting out 2013 a little differently.

My Goals for the Year:

1) Share more about myself here.

2) Shoot more weddings.

Where did #2 come from? I assure you, it wasn’t out of left field. Because if I’m being perfectly honest in my attempt to accomplish Goal #1, I would be completely remiss if I didn’t disclose the other little nagging voice that has been yelling at me for most of 2012. That voice has been begging me, pleading with me, screaming at me, to shoot more weddings.

You see, I’m hooked. I’m hooked on the details, the beauty, the romance, the emotion. I re-live my own happy wedding day whenever I capture a new couple’s in my lens. I return home after the working day exhausted, exhilarated, and I immediately download my cards to review every detail again. I have wedding dreams. I *may* have subscribed to some wedding publications recently for inspiration.

And so, I start 2013 here with a look at a beautiful wedding that I had the opportunity to second shoot last November at the Baldwin School. It was my first time as a second shooter, and I completely loved it. The couple, Missy and Alex, could not have been more adorable, more wonderful to work with, and more in love with each other. It was truly amazing to bear witness to their celebration. I am so excited to share it here.

But, before I do that, I have one request, friends. If you know someone who is newly engaged, and planning their wedding, I would love it if you would tell them about me. I’d love to chat with them about their plans, and talk about how I can help capture the beauty of their celebration.

Holly Gruszka - Good for you Carrie for putting more of yourself out there. I started the same way. I wasn’t really sharing a ton of personal info but I slowly started sharing more. As hard as starting a business is, it feels so good to be rewarded and to do something you love, doesn’t it? Looking forward to working with you at the end of April

December Was Baby Month…Main Line Newborn Photographer

Babies babies babies…this month was all about the babies! And, for those of you who check into Silver Linings with some frequency, you know of the special place I have in my heart for newborns. So, whenever I answered a call from an expecting client to learn that their newborn had arrived, it felt like Christmas for me. December was truly a lovely month!

I was thrilled to be able to schedule this handsome little guy’s session just three days after his birth, and before the holiday, making him, officially, my last shoot of 2012. At three days’ old, this little one had already discovered his hands. Whenever we would swaddle him, he’d manage to get one arm, usually his right, out. A regular little Houdini (or, perhaps, my swaddle skills are starting to fade…no, never!).

I’m hoping to see him and his sweet family again in 2013! All the best to you and your families this New Year!

Baby A…

I think I may have been as excited about this little one’s birth as her mom was. I think I also may have pestered her sweet mom just a bit about her arrival. But it was all in good fun. Mom is a great friend of mine. I was so thrilled to be able to capture these moments for their family to treasure. Welcome to the world, sweet baby Quatro! So so many of us are so so excited that you’re here.
